About Foster Carers
¨ Foster carers play a vital role in helping to save the lives of dogs
who may face being destroyed, often over something as simple as a lack of kennel space
¨
Foster carers create
a greater opportunity for a dog to be rehomed as it is often difficult to obtain a true assessment of a dog’s personality
and temperament in the kennel environment. A dog being cared for in a stable home environment will soon be shaped into a healthy,
stable animal both physically and mentally
¨
Although the majority
of dogs adapt well to kennel life it is not an ideal situation for any dog. Foster carers are able to provide essential love,
training and understanding that these neglected, unwanted or abandoned animals so desperately need
¨
Each dog that is released
into foster care leaves behind a vacant kennel space which means that another dog from our waiting list is able to come into
our care
Veterinary
and Feeding Costs
¨ Happy Staffie Rescue will cover the cost of veterinary fees. More details of this are
available in the Foster Carers Contract
¨
All food and feeding
bowls will be provided by us, as will a suitable lead and collar. The collar will be fitted with a disc displaying details
of Happy Staffie Rescue and must be worn by the dog at all times when outdoors. Bedding can be provided by upon request. Any
extra costs such as dog safety gate’s, toys etc will be the responsibility of the foster carer
Terms of Fostering
¨ We
will ask you to have several meetings with a dog before an agreement is made regarding fostering. This is to ensure that both
you and the dog are happy with one another so as to prevent mismatches and “yo-yoing”; if a dog is constantly
placed with and removed from foster care and kennel, behavioural and psychological problems can occur. Therefore, it is essential
that you are committed and that the dog you choose to foster is the right dog for you and your family
¨
Unfortunately, we are
unable to give a clear indication of the length of time a dog will be in your care before finding an adoptive family
¨
You will need to have
your own transport to be able to collect the dog for fostering. Happy Staffie Rescue cannot fund transport costs.
¨
You must agree to allow
prospective adoption applicants into your home to visit the dog. All applicants will have been verbally interviewed by our
welfare / rehoming manager.
¨
A monthly review will
be made in the interests of you, your family and the dog. As a foster carer you are always welcome to contact us for
any reason relating to the dog in your care
¨ If you decide you wish to adopt the dog that you are caring for the
normal adoption procedure will be adhered to.
¨ When a suitable permanent home is found for the dog, a mutual time
and date will be arranged for a member of the Happy Staffie Rescue team and the dog’s new adoptive owner to meet at
your property for collection of the dog. Alternative arrangements can be made when and where necessary.
The Fostering Application Procedure is as follows
¨
You will be required
to complete a Foster Scheme Application form to tell us about you, your home and any experience and knowledge you have of
the Staffordshire bull terrier breed
¨
You will have an informal
telephone interview with our Dog Welfare and Rehoming Manager which will enable you to ask any questions you may have about
becoming a foster carer
¨
A home check will take
place at your property to assess the suitability of your home and that there is an adequate, safe and secure garden / exercise
area for the dog
¨
Successful applicants
will be required to complete a Foster Scheme Contract
