About Assisted Carers

Some dogs that come into rescue are overlooked because of age, illness or behavioural or psychological problems. These dogs deserve to find loving homes just as much as the others:

¨       Assisted carers provide a vital service especially for older dogs, dogs suffering from illness or those on long term medication. These dogs are often overlooked and will end their days within kennels

¨       Although the majority of dogs adapt well to kennel life it is not an ideal situation for any dog. Assisted carers are able to provide essential love, training and understanding that these neglected, unwanted or abandoned animals so desperately need

¨       As an assisted carer you will provide a permanent home for an overlooked dog but you will be assisted with certain financial outgoings

¨       Each dog that is released into Assisted care leaves behind a vacant kennel space which means that another dog from our waiting list is able to come into our care

Veterinary and Feeding Costs

¨       Happy Staffie Rescue will cover all veterinary fees as well as flea and worm treatments for the dog.

¨       All food and feeding bowls will be provided by us, as will a suitable lead and collar. The collar will be fitted with a disc displaying details of Happy Staffie Rescue and must be worn by the dog at all times when outdoors. Bedding can be provided upon request. Any extra costs such as dog safety gate’s, toys etc will be the responsibility of the assisted carer

Terms of Assist Caring

¨
We will ask you to have several meetings with a dog before an agreement is made regarding assisted caring. This is to ensure that both you and the dog are compatible. If a dog is incorrectly placed with an unsuitable assisted carer and has to return to kennels, behavioural and psychological problems may occur. Therefore, it is essential that you are committed and that the dog you choose to care for is the right dog for you and your family

¨       You will need to have your own transport to be able to collect the dog from the kennels. Happy Staffie Rescue cannot fund transport costs.

¨       A monthly review will take place in the interests of you, your family and the dog. As an assisted carer you are always welcome to contact us for any reason relating to the dog in your care

¨       If you decide you wish to adopt the dog that you are caring for, the normal adoption procedure will be adhered to

The Assisted Caring Application Procedure is as follows

¨       You will be required to complete an Assisted Caring Scheme Application form to tell us about you, your home and any experience and knowledge you have of the Staffordshire bull terrier breed

¨       You will have an informal telephone interview with our Dog Welfare and Rehoming Manager which will enable you to ask any questions you may have about becoming an assisted carer

¨       A home check will take place at your property to assess the suitability of your home and that there is an adequate, safe and secure garden / exercise area for the dog

¨       Successful applicants will be required to complete an Assistant Caring Scheme Contract
